Growing UP In/Living In
Growing Up in Brookline (GUIB) meant going to HoJo’s or Friendly’s for ice cream treats.
Living in Westford (LIW) means planning your trip to Kimballs to avoid the long lines.
GUIB meant going to my local record store in Coolidge Corner to buy the newest 45 from the Beach Boys or Beatles.
LIW means having the entire Beach Boys or Beatles collection at my fingertips via Spotify.
GUIB meant corned beef sandwiches from Jack and Marions.
LIW means a great local Jewish deli…..er, never mind.
GUIB meant riding my bike to my local park to play pick-up games or hang with my friends.
LIW means organized sports from an early age, with parents cheering or coaching from the sidelines.
GUIB meant two Jewish bakeries withing walking distance from my house for our weekly Challah on Friday.
LIW means trips to Rosenfelds for our Challah.
GUIB meant my grandmother’s weekly order from Joe the fruit man and Sam the butcher.
LIW means Joe’s fruit store is a liquor store, and Sam’s shop is a trendy café.
GUIB meant having 8 Temples in town.
LIW means regional Temples serving communities 40 miles apart.
Send my your recollections and I’ll feature them in a future column.
